Papua New Guinea Mediation Research
Legal Framework
On July 9, 2024, Papua New Guinea's Arbitration (Domestic) Act 2024 and Arbitration (International) Act 2024 came into force, repealing the previous Arbitration Act 1951. The Acts position PNG in line with the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Arbitration. The International Arbitration Act gives effect to the New York Convention which PNG acceded to on July 17, 2019. The National Court Act was amended in 2008 to provide procedures for ADR through mediation.

Court System
The National Court Act provides for powers of the Court to order or direct proceedings to be resolved by way of mediation with or without consent of parties. The Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre was officially opened on September 4, 2009.
