The Act is based on the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, making Malaysia a pro-arbitration jurisdiction especially for international disputes. The Mediation Act 2012 is a significant piece of legislation that governs mediation in Malaysia, providing a structure for mediation processes particularly in commercial disputes. The Act allows for court referred mediation and establishes procedures for mediators and the mediation process. In August 2025, the government announced a review of the Mediation Act 2012 to enable Singapore Convention ratification and align domestic mediation law with international standards.
